This is a publicity shoot I produced for the promo images for UTOPIA at Arnolfini. As an event does not really exist until the day, I believe evocative imagery is key to capturing the imagination of the public and giving a visual portal into the production. I chose to capture some rabbit ballerina characters which I had designed, as they make highly captivating visuals. The Rabbits are a good reflection of my fondness for the otherworldly and surreal, mixed with beautiful and classical sensibilities.
I worked with the highly talented fine art photographer Oxana Mazur. As soon as we started planning together I spotted that she was a dancer by an articulated arm movement, as I too have a background in movement and dance. It turns out that she is a trained ballet dancer, she is Originally from Russia where this is not unusual. Oxana’s dance training gives her an outstanding ability to create imagery with the human body.
As I had seen and very much liked Oxana’s work before, I gave her a completely free reign in creating the images, and was delighted with the outcome. Oxana directed the performers, giving them very specific instructions, especially for the final picture, which became the poster for the event. As with the UTOPIA event itself, I was also really happy with the contrast of the whimsical characters against the minimal modern background of the Arnolfini.
Talented Bristol based aerial dancer Abby Nenuphar also took part in the shoot, styled in her own costumes.
